Offshoring back in the frame to grow businesses

More companies may be forced to consider exporting jobs overseas as competition for skilled labour tightens.

Rather than a cost-cutting exercise, Offshoring and outsourcing may be a means of ensuring growth, or at least sustainability, in the face of a predicted tighter labour market in the next 5-10 years, as more baby boomers retire but not enough graduates replace them.

In at least two recent reports, professional services company Deloitte has advocated Offshoring, or outsourcing roles to regional centers, as a strategy to combat skills shortages and free up local staff for more productive work.

"Where they do need workers on the ground and those workers are scarce, perhaps it's an idea to offshore teams for particular aspects and tasks, and they really just need to challenge their thinking around what tasks they want to export and what tasks they want to keep closely held in their own backyard," Jody Burton, an assurance and advisory partner in Deloitte's SA office, said.

Offshoring suffered a stigma among the public because it was seen as "stealing Australian jobs" and even among business which had tried it but decided the quality of work delivered did not meet expectations, she said.

Deloitte's most recent national survey of chief financial officers found 77 per cent of the 85 respondents expected their company to suffer a skills shortage in the coming year and 44 per cent expecting to increase their demand for these harder-to-come-by skills.

"Even so, few CFOs had changed their recruitment patterns or explored more transformational options such as off-shoring non-core business activities to overseas resources," the Batten Down the Hatches report said.

Besides the reputation hazard, Ms Burton suggested this could be because previous attempts had not achieved expected outcomes.

She said the "skills gap" in India had shrunk in recent years.

"Now, I think, over the past three or four years, the level of education over there, the standard of qualifications has increased exponentially.

"I think those that tried it early and were not satisfied by the level of skills are once bitten, twice shy."

Using a cloud platform to outsource IT operations is a big consideration for many businesses at present. Cost reductions and a higher degree of flexibility are the primary drivers behind companies taking the plunge with the new technology.

Secondly, he stated, weighing up current and future costs against the benefits on offer is important. However, he was keen to note: "I’ve found that, in almost all cases of outsourcing to the cloud, businesses that reduce their IT estate and centralize servers in a third-party data centre still have ample processing power and storage to realize these kinds of ambitions."

Despite this, his third point is to look beyond the figures. Cloud should not be looked up on just in terms or cost reduction and day to day operations, it can also work as an effective back up the event of an unforeseen disaster.

Fourthly, he advised that your companies should optimize their networks for the cloud. He stated that too often the network is an afterthought when outsourcing projects begin and can impact on performance. Increasing bandwidth is another thing company’s neglect using a cloud-based platform.

Lastly, he said that a business should get to know its provider. He suggested speaking to their other clients to find out whether they will be a good fit for your business.

Cloud computing is taking off wildly with a number of city and county councils implementing its services.

CSC to Outsource IT for Education Organization on $200M Renewal

Computer Sciences Corp. has signed a five-and-a-half year IT outsourcing contract renewal and expansion with the Educational Testing Service, which aims to advance the quality and equity of education for people worldwide.

If all options are exercised, the agreement has an estimated value of more than $200 million. CSC has provided IT solutions for ETS since 2001. CSC will provide network support, end-user support, security operations and other services.

CSC said it will also “continue to bring new and innovative approaches to the way ETS leverages IT” with its CloudCompute infrastructure as a service architecture for data centers that supports applications and hosts business workloads.
